SAVANNAH, Ga. – Samantha Parrish recorded a double-double with a match-high 18 kills and 18 digs to help the No. 6 seed Newberry College upset the No. 3 seed Flagler College 3-1 (14-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-23) in the first quarterfinal of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Thursday afternoon at The ARC.
Flagler, the defending Southeast Region champion, ended its season with a 22-11 record. Newberry improved to 19-14 and will advance to tomorrow's semifinal match.
Lauren Prachar added 13 kills and 15 digs while Jessica King contributed 12 kills and hit .400 with only two errors on 25 swings. King added five digs and three total blocks. Elayni Stokes collected 17 digs while Lisa Ross added 15 more. Blair Browning tallied a match-high 48 assists and just missed a double-double of her own as she tacked on nine digs.
Dianna Craine led the Saints with 17 kills and added 14 digs for her 16th double-double of the season.
Sophie Meyer hit .350 with eight kills and had just one error on 20 swings.
Casey Gnann collected a match-high 27 digs.
Caitlyn Kovach added 14 digs.
Amelia Morgan tallied 44 assists.
Flagler opened the first set on a 7-2 tear and would go on to win handily, 25-14. The Saints held the Wolves to a -.033 hitting percentage in the first set.
Newberry reversed the score in the second set. The Wolves used an 8-2 run to take a 17-8 lead which was capped by a hitting error by the Saints. Flagler hit just .029 in the set with seven kills and six errors on 34 swings. Parrish hit .385 in the set for Newberry with six kills and had one error on 13 swings.
Parrish was on fire in the third set racking up nine of Newberry's 15 kills. The Wolves took a 7-6 lead on the Saints after a service error by Kovach and never looked back. Flagler closed to within one (16-15) after a Craine kill, but Newberry reeled off the next four points to re-gain control of the set.
The fourth set saw 12 ties and three lead changes. The Saints rallied from being down 15-12 and took the lead, 20-19, on a double-block by
Abby Meyers and Craine. The score was tied 23-all after a Ross hitting error, but Prachar recorded a kills to set-up match point and
Rachel Stacy had an attack error to end the match.
The win for Newberry was its first in just two appearances in regional play. Flagler swept Newberry last year in the quarterfinal round of the regional.
