Flagler women finish ninth at regional

LAKELAND − The Flagler College women's golf team, in its first-ever NCAA Division II regional appearance, finished in ninth place with 957 at the Super Region #2 which concluded Tuesday afternoon at The Club at Eaglebrooke (par 72; 6255 yards).

Two-time defending national champion, Nova Southeastern University (875) won the regional title by 13 strokes over Rollins College (888). Florida Southern College, the host school, finished third with an 892. Those three schools advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships in Allendale, Mich., May 11-14.

Individually, Sandra Changkija of Nova Southeastern vaulted topped the 49-woman field with a 2-under par 214 in the 54-hole tournament. She won by three strokes over fellow teammate Abby Gittings (+1, 217). The top three individuals, who are not on one of the three advancing teams, also advance to the national championships. The individuals moving on are: Rita Kim at Belmont Abbey College (+5, 221), Emily Gibson of the University of Montevallo (+10, 226) and Mary Tunnell of Carson-Newman (+11, 227). Kim finished in a tie for sixth place while 

Elin Karlsson (Vanersborg, Sweden, Vaxjo Fria Gymnasium) finished in a tie for 29th place with a 20-over 236. She carded a 6-over 78 in the final round. She carded an 11-over 83 today. Seenath recorded one birdie and five pars. Lauren Benetti (Celebration, Fla., Daytona State College) and Leslie Choucard (Chessy, France, Mercer University) tied for 41st. Both finished with a 27-over 243. Benetti shot a 9-over 81 today while Choucard had the best round of the regional of any Flagler player with a 4-over 76. Marissa Marinan (Niceville, Fla, Niceville HS) tied for 43rd place with a 29-over 245. Victoria Seenath (Toronto, Ontario, Seminole State College of Florida) rounded out the Flagler contingent with a 33-over 249 and finished in 46th place.
