HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. − The Flagler College women's golf team opened the spring season with a fifth place finish at the Newberry College Invitational which concluded Tuesday at the Moss Creek Golf Course (par 74, 5808 yards). The Saints shot a 350 this afternoon and finished the 36-hole tournament with a 685.

No. 15 (NGCA Coaches Poll) UNC Pembroke topped the 12-team field with a 637. They held off the host school, No. 19 Newberry (648), by 11 strokes. Katja Dammann of UNCP earned medalist honors with a 5-over par 153. Her round today (76), was the lowest of the entire tournament. She won by five strokes over Barbara Castro who shot 10-over 158. 

Elin Karlsson (Vanersborg, Sweden, Vaxjo Fria Gymnasium) finished in a tie for 16th place with a 21-over 169. Lauren Benetti (Celebration, Fla., Daytona State College)was one shot back with a 22-over 170 and finished in a tie for 19th place. Leslie Choucard (Chessy, France, Mercer University) placed 29th with a 26-over 174. Victoria Seenath (Toronto, Canada, Seminole State College of Florida) and Maria Alstrom (Falsterbo, Sweden, Sundsgymnasiet) tied for 31st place with a 27-over 175.

Flagler will now prepare for the Lady Moc Invitational at The Club at Eaglebrooke in Lakeland Feb. 21-22.
