MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The St. Thomas University Bobcats (30-16, 12-6 Florida Sun) swept a Florida Sun Conference baseball doubleheader from the Flagler College Saints (27-22, 7-11) 3-0 and 7-4 and kept its hopes alive for a berth in the NAIA Region XIV Tournament in Daytona Beach starting on May 8. The loss in the first game by Flagler eliminates the Saints from postseason considerations.

In the opener, Eddie Machin and Tim Davis combined on a six-hit shutout and struck out six batters, three apiece, in leading the Bobcats to the 3-0 victory.

Machin (6-1) tossed four innings and scattered four hits before giving way to Davis who earned his fourth save.

Juan Mora (3-3, 2B, RBI) led off the second inning with a double and was then sacrificed over to third. Cesar Florin followed with a perfect execution of a suicide squeeze and even reached first when he beat Flagler starter Austin Donmoyer (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area HS) to the bag.

Adrian F. Gonzalez hit a solo home run in the third and Mora added an RBI-single in the frame to cap the scoring.

Donmoyer (5-3) went five innings and allowed nine hits and three runs in picking up the loss. Preston Picard (Detroit, Mich./Madonna U.) went 2-for-3 with both hits being singles.

In the nightcap, a Ryan Ricke RBI-single in the bottom of the third put the Bobcats ahead 5-1 and they held off a sixth inning rally by the Saints to win 7-4.

St. Thomas drew first blood on an RBI-double by Daniel DiFabio and an RBI-single by Alex Rodriguez (2-3, R, 2 RBI) in the bottom of the first to give the Bobcats a quick 2-0 lead.

Flagler would get a run back in the top of the second after the first three batters all reached base and Randy Miller (Jacksonville, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) (1-2, 2B, 2 RBI) drew a bases loaded walk from reliever Dario Martinez.

St. Thomas added a run in the second and then tacked on two more in the third.

Flagler had a spirited rally in the top of the sixth after Jason Jones (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton HS) hit a one-out single to get things rolling. Bryan Harrell (Granger, Ind./Lincoln Trail College) (2-4, 2R) followed by reaching on an error by the Bobcat third baseman. The runners would advance a base on a wild pitch and Jones would score on Mike Scott's (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) groundout. Chris Guerra (Fremont, Calif./Mount Mercy College) singled in Harrell and Miller would later double in another run to cut the score to 5-4.

Adrian B. Gonzalez (3-3, R, 2 RBI) added a run for St. Thomas in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI-single and then the Bobcats scored another run on a sacrifice fly to wrap up the scoring in the frame and the game.

Martinez (1-0) tossed 4.2 innings in relief, scattered four hits and allowed three earned runs and struck out five to earn the victory. Aurelio Cicard finished the game to earn his second save after tossing 1.1 innings. Juan Mora went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and a run scored.

Wes Burgess (St. Augustine, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) (3-4) went two-plus innings and allowed seven hits and five runs in taking the loss.

Flagler College travels to Jacksonville on Apr. 19 to take on Edward Waters College in a 5 p.m. scheduled start.
