ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Flagler's Kenny Bargfeldt (Fishers, Ind./Ball State U.) came off the bench to pinch hit in the bottom of the eighth inning with runners at first second and two out and the Saints trailing 7-5. He blasted a 1-1 pitch over the right-center field fence, just to the right of the scoreboard to give Flagler an 8-7 lead, one they would hold on to for win Friday night against a stubborn Mount Mercy College team from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Saints rallied last from an 8-3 deficit going into the bottom of the eighth last night in a 10-9 win over Grand View College.

Derek Blaylock (1-1) took the hill in the bottom of the eighth, spelling Matt Cross who pitched one-third of an inning in the seventh. He fanned the first hitter he faced, but Flagler's Kris King (Youngstown, Ohio/Santa Fe CC) ripped a single to left field to start the rally. The next batter lined out to right and Bryan Harrell (Granger, Ind./Lincoln Trail College) singled to third to set up Bargfeldt's three-run homer.

Mount Mercy (3-15) scored four runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead. A pair of RBI singles and a Flagler error helped the Mustangs plate four runs.

Chris Guerra (Fremont, Calif./Mount Mercy College) doubled, singled twice and scored a pair of runs for Flagler (23-14). King went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run to left field which gave the Saints an early 2-1 lead. He also scored two runs and drove in two.

Paul Mathews (Baton Rouge, La./Saint Louis CC-Meramec) (8-0) remained perfect on the year after tossing two and one-third innings and allowing five hits and two runs. Jim Roche (Hastings, Fla./St. Joseph Academy) earned the save allowing one hit in the ninth and he struck out a batter.

Daniel Jones led Mount Mercy with a 3-for-5 night, all singles. The 1-4 hitters for the Mustangs batted 8-for-19 with five runs scored and five RBI. Blaylock allowed three hits and three runs in the eighth inning and took the loss for the Mustangs.

The same two teams meet tomorrow (Mar. 25) at 2 p.m. at Flagler Stadium. Prior to the start of the game, the recipient of the Red Cox Award will be honored.
