LAKELAND, Fla. − Liz Gorman scored a pair of goals and Linda Hoglund added a goal and two assists to lead Florida Southern College to a 4-1 win over Flagler College in a non-conference women's soccer match Tuesday night at Barnett Field. Florida Southern raises its record to 6-1 and Flagler drops its third match in a row and falls to 3-3.
Florida Southern played an aggressive first half, out shooting Flagler 13-0. Hoglund got the Mocs on the board first when she knocked in a rebound in the 118th minute. She knocked in Princess Haley's initial shot which was saved by
Hope McArthur (Venice, Fla./Andrew College), but not secured.
About eight minutes later, Amy Holsenbeck headed in Hoglund's corner kick to give the Mocs a 2-0 lead. The score would hold through the first half.
Gorman scored the first of her two goals in the second half in the 51st minute as she headed in a rebound off another Haley shot. Almost six minutes later, Gorman scored again on a header.
Flagler avoided the shutout when
Elizabeth Glasgow (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach HS) boomed a shot in from 25 yards out off a
Caitlin Eggimann (Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze HS) feed.
Sarah Furr recorded four saves for the Mocs while McArthur collected a career-high 13 saves for the Saints.
Florida Southern out-shot Flagler 21-9 but the Saints held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. Flagler was whistled for 17 fouls.
Flagler continues on its five-match road trip with a Saturday match at Queens University of Charlotte, N.C. at 1 p.m. The Saints will then go to Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C., to take on Lees-McRae College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
