Coaching at Flagler
Blake Selland was named the head men's basketball coach April 21, 2022. He joined the men's basketball coaching staff on May 18, 2017 as an assistant for head coach Chad Warner.
The Saints posted a 15-13 overall record and went 9-9 in the PBC. Flagler advanced to the conference tournament. Selland coached two players to all-conference honors, Jax Bouknight and Josiah Shackelford, and Shackelford was the recipient of the PBC Freshman of the Year award. Flagler was second in the conference free throw percentage (.737) and third in field goal percentage (.476).
Selland coached the Saints to a 20-11 overall record and an 11-7 mark in conference play in 2023-24. He helped the Saints reach the PBC Tournament final. Malik Bryant and Destin Clark both earned all-conference honors while Jalen Barr was selected as the league's defensive player of the year. Flagler finished second in the PBC in scoring offense (82.0 ppg) and field goal percentage (47.0), third in rebounds (37.3), and topped the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.23).
In his first season as head coach at Flagler, he led the Saints to a 13-17 overall record and a 7-11 record in the Peach Belt Conference. Selland guided the team to a seventh place finish in the always competitive PBC. Malik Bryant earned first team all-conference honors while Kyle Young was selected to the third team. The Saints led the league in scoring offense (82.0 ppg) and was third in field goal percentage (.490). Flagler topped the conference in 3-point field goal percentage sinking 39.2 percent and was second in free throw percentage (73.4). The Saints were also second in assists per game (15.9). Flagler opened last season in the premier NCAA Division II in-season tournament, the Small College Hall of Fame Classic, where it faced top-ranked Northwest Missouri State University. The Saints also bested then-No. 6 Augusta University, 89-75, on the road.
As an assistant, Selland helped coach the Saints to a 41-11 overall record and a 25-5 mark in the Peach Belt Conference in the last two years (2020-22) combined, which included a final four appearance in 2020-21. He coached a two-time NCAA Division II All-American in Jaizec Lottie, the first in the program's history. The Saints had a record four All-PBC selections in 2020-21, including Lottie who was selected as the PBC Player of the Year. Jalen Barr earned PBC Defender of the Year honors. Selland's mentor, Chad Warner, was named the NABC South Region Coach of the Year in 2020-21. He also recruited Flagler's first first team all-conference player, Gedi Juozapaitis.
Prior to Flagler
Selland played guard for Shorter University and helped the Hawks to a NAIA Division I “Fab Four” in 2012 and the NCCAA national championship in 2013. Following his graduation in 2015, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach for Tyler Murray at Shorter. In both seasons, the Hawks qualified for the Gulf South Conference Tournament. Selland helped coach Phil Taylor to D2CCA All-America honors.
