Coaching at Flagler
Matt Affolder is in his eighth season as Flagler's head coach and the Saints have won three Peach Belt Conference Tournament titles and made four NCAA post-season tournament appearances.
2020 - Affolder coached the Saints to their fourth regular season league title in the last five years. Flagler won 14-of-its-last-16 matches. Kennedy Muff took home PBC Setter of the Year honors while Muff, Logan Garcia, and Rebekah Machovec all earned first team all-conference accolades.
2019 - Coached the Saints to their third regular season Peach Belt Conference title in the last four years. Flagler won 10 matches in a row and reeled off 15-of-16 late in the year. Karlie Redfern, Rachel Machovec, and Kennedy Muff earned all-conference honors and Muff took home PBC Freshman of the Year honors. Redfern earned honorable mention all-region accolades.
2018 - The Saints had two all-conference players in Karlie Redfern and Raquel Kulak on the team. Both earned AVCA All-Southeast Region honors as Redfern was a first-team selection and Kulak took home honorable mention honors.
2017 - Flagler made its eighth appearance in regional play and crowned NCAA Division II Southeast Regional champions for the third time in the history of the program. It was the first time the regional tournament was played at Flagler Gym and its was the first time the Saints were the No. 1 seed. The Saints won their sixth PBC Tournament crown and fifth regular season title. The Saints won the conference tournament for the third year in a row and won its second consecutive regular season crown. Sara Davis closed out a banner career earning AVCA All-America second-team honors and was the PBC Player of the Year. Taja Valmyr joined Davis as an AVCA All-American, marking the first time in history of the program Flagler has had multiple All-Americans. She was selected to the third-team. Karlie Redfern was selected as the PBC Freshman of the Year while Davis, Valmyr and Tara Savisky were first-team all-conference selections. Redfern took home second-team all-conference accolades and was the AVCA Southeast Region Freshman of the Year. Flagler was ranked No. 24 in the final national poll.
2016 - The Saints made their seventh regional appearance and won their fifth conference tournament title. Flagler shared the regular season crown. Davis became Flagler's second player to earn All-America honors from the AVCA. She was selected to the third-team. Davis was joined by Megan Hooks and Savisky on the all-conference team.
2015 - The Saints won their fourth postseason conference tournament title. Affolder has three of his players earn all-region honors: Davis, Savisky and Hooks. Savisky was selected as the region's freshman of the year, the second consecutive year a Flagler player has won the honor. Three players earned all-conference honors.
2014 - Affolder coached the AVCA Southeast Region Freshman of the Year and PBC Freshman of the Year, Sara Davis. He had two student-athletes earn academic all-conference honors.
Prior to Flagler
Affolder had a one-year stint as the head coach at NCAA Division I University of Dayton. He posted a 16-13 overall record and went 8-6 in the Atlantic 10 Conference in 2013. The Flyers were ranked as high as No. 22 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25. He was an assistant coach at Dayton for five years (2008-12).
Under his leadership, Dayton became one of the top defensive teams in the country as it ranked No. 5 in blocks per set (3.0). The Flyers led the nation in that category numerous times during the season. Affolder guided two players, Megan Campbell and Janna Krafka, to All-Atlantic 10 Conference honors. Campbell also joined Isolde Hannan on the Academic All-Atlantic 10 accolades.
As an assistant at Dayton, the Flyers amassed a 131-33 overall record and a 68-4 mark in the A-10. Dayton won four conference regular season and tournament championships. The Flyers earned a berth to the NCAA Division I Tournament all five years he was an assistant. Three times (2009, 2010 and 2012) Dayton advanced to the second round of the tournament. Affolder coached 10 AVCA Division I All-Americans. In 2010, the Flyers became the first program in the history of the school to be nationally ranked the entire season. From 2008-12, Stanford University and Dayton were the only teams to be nationally ranked and receive the AVCA Team Academic Award.
Prior to his time at Dayton, Affolder served as an assistant coach at Indiana University (2004-06) and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale (2002-04). He also spent time as an undergraduate coach while earning his bachelor’s in political science at Indiana State University (1999-2001). He also spent time as a head coach at Wapahani High School in Selma, Ind. (1996-98) and was a varsity assistant and freshman coach at Muncie (Ind.) Central High School (1994-95).
Additionally, Affolder served as a coach for the tradition-rich Munciana (Ind.) Volleyball Club for seven years. His Munciana teams captured the 1998 USA Volleyball National Championship for the 16 & Under Club Division, finished in the top 10 twice and boasted 10 USA Volleyball All-Americans.
Personal
Affolder and his wife, Nicole, have two sons, Joshua and Tyler.
