Coaching at Flagler
Mo Smith was hired as the 19th head women's basketball coach at Flagler College on June 9, 2019.
He coached the Saints to a 13-15 overall record and a 9-9 mark in the PBC in 2024-25. Flagler lost nine games by 10 points or fewer. Sharale McCormick and Destiny McClendon eac earned a spot on the all-conference team. Three more players earned academic all-conference honors. The Saints finished third in the PBC in scoring average (71.1 ppg) and 3-point field goals made per game (7.0). Flagler led the conference in free throw percentage (75.9) and was third in rebounds per game (39.4).
In 2023-24, he coached Sharale McCormick and Destiny McClendon to second team All-PBC honors as well as Beka Benge took home the Elite 18 award. The Saints led the PBC in 3-point field goal percentage (33.4) and free throw percentage (74.5), finished third in field goal percentage defense (38.4) and 3-point field goal percentage defense (28.4). Four players earned academic all-conference honors.
He coached Sharale McCormick to third-team All-Peach Belt Conference accolades in 2022-23. The Saints finished in third place in the PBC in 3-point field goal percentage defense (28.4) and fourth in 3-point field percentage (33.0). Flagler was second in defensive rebounds per game (28.8).
Smith coached Tori Pearce to first team All-PBC honors in 2021-22. Pearce was selected as the PBC's Defensive Player of the Year. She had a pair of triple-doubles and finished the year third in the country in assists per game, fourth in assists, sixth in steals, and ninth in double-doubles.
Flagler won its last three games of the season to finish with a 7-7 overall record and a 6-6 mark in league play.
The Saints posted a 6-20 record in his first season, but five of those wins came at Flagler Gymnasium. Flagler lost 14 games by 10 points or less. Rayven Wade earned third-team All-Peach Belt Conference honors.
Prior to Flagler
Smith coached Georgia College to three Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship games. The Bobcats won the title in his first season (2010-11) and made an appearance in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional the same year. Georgia College knocked off the host school, USC Aiken, to win the tournament championship that year and was led by the tournament's most valuable player Chimere Jordan. Smith's coaching resume includes 131 wins in his nine seasons at Georgia College, second most of any women's basketball coach in the program's history.
He coached six players to all-conference honors, including Shanteona Keys, who is one of only five players to earn all-league honors all four years. She was one of the most decorated players ever in the PBC as she was an Elite 15 Award recipient, the PBC Scholar Athlete of the Year, a two-time CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America®, and an honorable mention WBCA All-American.
The College Park, Georgia native spent 18 years at Georgia College. He arrived as a student-athlete in 1999 after spending two years at Wallace Community College in Dothan, Alabama. He earned second-team all-conference honors in 2001. The year prior, Smith played on one of the best teams in the history of the program as he was the sixth-man on the 1999-2000 elite eight squad.
Smith became a student assistant for the men's team in 2003-04 and continued as a graduate assistant until 2005-06. That season the Bobcats won the conference title and advanced to the NCAA sweet 16. He switched to the women's team the next season as an assistant coach before taking the head coaching reigns in 2010-11. Two of the teams he helped coach as an assistant, 2006-07 and 2009-10, posted 20-win seasons and the 2006-07 team advanced to the NCAA sweet 16.
Personal
Smith married the former Martine Thomas, also a Georgia College alum, and they have two daughters, Jaiden and Olivia.
