Biography

Coach Barnett says: “Wes is a striker thrower who will be used in long relief and a as a spot starter.”

2007 (JUNIOR): Made 10 appearances with three starts on the hill...Posted a 3-1 record with a 6.46 ERA...In 30.2 innings pitched, he fanned 25 batters...Pitched four innings of relief to earn the win vs. Tennessee Wesleyan (Feb. 28)...Struck out a season-high six batters to pick up the win in relief vs. Northwood (Feb. 24)...Earned win in a relief appearance vs. St. Thomas (Apr. 27)...Tossed 4.1 innings allowing only one hit and did not allow a run vs. St. Thomas. 

2006 (SOPHOMORE): Made 12 appearances on the mound, starting 11…Tossed three complete games, two shutouts and earned a save…Posted a 3-4 record with a 3.47 ERA…Tossed 70.0 innings…Pitched a one-hit shutout at Florida Memorial (Mar. 4) just missing a perfect game…Also tossed a complete game four-hit shutout against Warner Southern (Feb. 25)…Had a streak of 18.1 scoreless innings pitched.

(2005) FRESHMAN: Posted a 7-3 record and a 3.41 ERA for the Saints…Made 15 appearances with 11 starts and tossed five complete games. Had season-high six strikeouts in consecutive starts at Warner Southern (Feb. 19) and vs. St. Thomas (Mar. 5). Hurled a pair of shutouts (at Warner Southern and vs. Edward Waters)…Played for the Florence Red Wolves of the Central Plains League over the summer…Posted a 3-5 record with a 3.19 ERA…Tossed a six-hit complete game shutout against Fayetteville.

HIGH SCHOOL: Graduated from Bartram Trail High in Jacksonville…A four-year letterwinner in baseball for Coach Tony Sowers…Posted a 17-4 career record with an ERA of 1.07 and 195 strikeouts…An honorable mention All-State selection as a senior…A two-time All-County first-team member…All-County Player of the Year as a senior…Captained team as a senior…Played in the State and Regional All-Star Games in 2004.

PERSONAL: Son of Erwin and Terri Burgess…A sport management major…Has an older sister…Lists Kansas City Royal prospect Billy Butler as the best player he has faced and Cal Ripken, Jr. as his favorite athlete…His favorite class is Recreation/Fitness Management.
