Women's tennis falls short in the conference championship

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The No. 17-ranked (ITA Division II Top 50) Flagler College women's tennis team fell in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship against No. 9 Columbus State University, 4-1, this afternoon at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.

After the conclusion of the match, Sophomore transfer Elena Ondobo was named the tournament MVP in singles play. Ondobo went undefeated at the No. 2 spot, defeating Maria Gento of Augusta University 6-2 and 6-0 and defeating No. 34 Olesya Stokusova of University of North Georgia 6-3 and 7-5. Ondobo's match went unfinished against Monika Temkova where she was up 6-2, 4-6 and 2-1.

Their tenth loss this season, Flagler finished conference play with a 16-10 overall record and 9-2 against conference opponents. The Saints will wait till next week to see if and where they are placed for the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars moved up to 18-4 overall and earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. 

In singles the match was played to clinch. Ornella Lomenzo was the lone Saint to pull through, defeating Isabell Ek 6-3 and 6-4.
