Flagler falls in a nail biter at USCA

AIKEN, S.C. – Aspen Weeks led a balanced scoring attack for Flagler College with nine points and six rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the University of South Carolina Aiken pulled away late for a 62-55 win in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

USC Aiken snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 7-15 overall and 4-10 in the Peach Belt. The two teams split the two-game series this year. Flagler lost its third game in a row and dropped to 9-14 overall and 4-11 in conference play. Up next for the Saints is a road trip to Lander University, Feb. 14 at 1:30 p.m.

Down by as many as 11 points in the third quarter, the Saints chipped away and took the lead, 43-42, on a layup by Abby Smith with 6:08 left to play. Flagler trailed after that by as many as five, but were able to be within one possession several times down the stretch.

Emerson Kutz sank a free throw to cut USCA's lead to three (58-55) with 18 seconds to go. Mahkayla Premo and Ioanna Stefanaki both hit a pair of free throws to put the game away.

Marley Smith added eight points and seven rebounds for Flagler. Dennaye Hinds and Kutz each finished with eight points. Carleigh Grimm chipped in with seven points and five rebounds.

Mackenna Nix finished with a game high 19 points, as she sank 10 free throws, for the Pacers. Morgan McDermott and Premo each scored 13 points.
