ST. AUGUSTINE - The Flagler College women's tennis team opened their season off with a 7-0 sweep against Belmont Abbey College this morning at the Pollard Tennis Center.
No. 4 Flagler started their season off 1-0 while Belmont Abbey dropped to 0-1. Flagler will return to the courts on Thursday, Feb. 12 at noon for an exhibition match against No. 1 (NJCCA) Hillsborough Community College.
Starting doubles off,
Elena Ondobo and
Leah Waechter swept Leilany Sanchez and Davis McSwain 6-0 on court three.
Eryka Kruk and
Lea Jakic solidified the doubles point with a hard 7-6 (7-3) win against Hanley Riner and Mackenzie McCarthy.
Singles went off near perfect for No. 36Â Ondobo who gave their Saints their first singles point, defeating Kaitlin Nguyen 6-0 and 6-1.
Sofia Balsera gave the Saints a 3-0 lead after defeating Riner 6-1 and 6-2. To secure the match win, freshman
Marie Fairier defeated Sanchez with two 6-2 sets.
Ornella Lomenzo mirrored Ondobo's match, going 6-1, 6-0 against McSwain. At the helm, senior and No. 25 Kruk got her first win at court one against Alexis Burkhalter, 6-1, 4-6 and 6-1. To complete the sweep, Jakic went 6-3 and 6-3 against McCarthy.
