ST. AUGUSTINE –
Marley Smith and
Carleigh Grimm combined to score 24 points and grab 15 rebounds in Flagler College's 64-51 loss to the University of North Georgia in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler drops to 6-7 overall and 2-4 in the Peach Belt. North Georgia improved to 10-5 overall and 5-0 in conference play. The Nighthawks have won five of their last six games. Up next for the Saints is USC Beaufort on Wednesday at Bluffton, South Carolina.
Flagler held a 26-25 lead over North Georgia at the half, but the Nighthawks used a 14-1 run late in the third quarter to wipe out a 36-33 Flagler advantage. UNG would not trail again. Riley Simmons' short jumper gave the Nighthawks the lead for good, 37-36, with 2:50 left to go in the third quarter.
Marley Smith scored a game high 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Saints. Grimm added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Abby Smith came off the bench to contribute nine points while
Natalie Herrin finished with a pair of season highs with 12 rebounds and seven assists.
Flagler was held to a season-low shooting percentage of 24.6 (16-65). However, the 47 rebounds were the second-most this season.
Averie Jones led North Georgia with 17 points. Simmons added 13 points and six rebounds while Hailey Cail tacked on 10 points. Jaleah Storr finished with 11 rebounds and five assists.
The Nighthawks induced 12 Saints turnovers and converted those into 16 points. UNG out-scored Flagler 32-10 in the paint.
