DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –
Marley Middlebrooks led Flagler College with 26 kills while
Clare Sheedy tallied 61 assists in the first two matches at the Bahama House Classic Friday at the ICI Center. Flagler lost to No. 6 (AVCA Division II Preseason To 25) Metropolitan State University-Denver 3-2 (13-25, 25-17, 25-20, 19-25, 12-15) and opened the day with a 3-0 (23-25, 11-25, 16-25) loss to the University of Sioux Falls.
Flagler opened the season with an 0-2 record. Sioux Falls and MSU-Denver were playing its season openers. The Saints take on former Peach Belt Conference rival, the University of Montevallo, at 10 a.m. tomorrow and then conclude the tournament against the host school, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, at 2:30 p.m.
In the second match, Middlebrooks recorded a career high 17 kills to pace the Saints attack.
Cassidy Bloom added 10 kills, four aces, and six digs. Sheedy just missed a double-double with 40 assists and nine digs.
Caity Clancy paced the defense with a match-high 22 digs.
Flagler hit .324 as a team in the third set with 14 kills and three errors on 34 swings.
Annika Helf notched a double-double for MSU-Denver with 11 kills and 11 digs. Alyssa Boyte finished with 10 kills, seven digs, and six total blocks. Megan Hagar had four aces.
In the first match against Sioux Falls, Middlebrooks had a team-high nine kills and five digs. Bloom added seven more kills and six digs. Sheedy tallied 21 assists while Clancy collected a match-high 10 digs.
Aubrey Gates led a balanced attack by the Cougars with 11 kills and she hit .381 with only three errors on 21 swings. Maci Lerseth collected nine digs. Haley Wolfe and Molly Minnema each recorded five total blocks.
