ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College Department of Athletics hosted the 12th annual Crimson & Gold Banquet Nov. 13 followed by the President's Golf Classic Nov. 14.
Heisman Trophy winner and legendary Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie served as the keynote speaker, for the second time, at the Crimson & Gold Banquet, held at the Embassy Suites by Hilton St. Augustine Oceanfront Resort. One hundred thirty-five golfers took to the links at the King & Bear at the World Golf Village the following day for the President's Golf Classic.
In total, the events raised over $199,000 to support the Flagler Athletics general scholarship fund.
"Both events were memorable and absolutely incredible events," said director of athletics
Jud Damon. "This was especially due to Doug Flutie, who has become a truly special friend of Flagler Athletics. We wish to extend our deepest gratitude to Doug and to his lifelong friend Joey Wiles, without whom Doug would never have been introduced to Saints Nation. Special thanks also to all of our friends and supporters who so generously decided to make a difference in the lives of our student-athletes by helping us raise funds for athletics scholarships."
Flutie, the 1984 Heisman Trophy winner at Boston College who played professional football for 21 years, talked about the importance of being a student first and an athlete second. He fielded questions on stage from Joey Wiles varying from his drop-kick point after attempt with the New England Patriots to his own charity, which helps raise money for research into finding a cure for autism.
The President's Golf Classic was played on a crisp, clear Friday morning at the King & Bear. This year's winner of the coveted Abare Cup was the team of Alan Bratic, Patrick Lamb, Chris Bray, and Alex Bennett. The longest drive was by Sawyer Dukes and Alex Bennet. Closest to the pin was Traci Livingston and Joe Sabatelia. This latest iteration of the President's Golf Classic solicited $77,000 in sponsorships.
The Department of Athletics would like to thank Flagler College, the countless people it took to put together and run the Crimson & Gold Banquet, as well as everyone at the King & Bear for another great President's Golf Classic.
