ST. AUGUSTINE — Marley Smith and
Natalie Herrin both had double-doubles as Flagler College defeated Saint Leo University 86-78 in a non-conference women's basketball game Monday night at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler improved to 2-1 on the season while Saint Leo dropped to 1-1. The Saints will travel to play their next game against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Smith scored 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, both game-highs, to secure her second double-double of the season.
Natalie Herrin added 17 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists for her first double-double.
Gabby Bush finished with 13 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and two blocked shots.
Jessica Dowdy tacked on 10 points.
Aspen Weeks contributed eight points, five assists, and five rebounds.
Flagler dominated on the boards 56-25 and had 29 offensive rebounds that led to 17 second chance points. The 56 rebounds were the most by a Saints team since Feb. 11, 2013 when they had 58 against Trinity Baptist College. Flagler also made 28 free throws in the game.
The Saints eliminated a seven-point deficit in the third quarter thanks to a 14-0 run that was sparked by a pair of Herrin free throws and a 3-pointer.
Emerson Kutz' trey with 3:53 left in the quarter gave Flagler a lead (55-54) it would not relinquish.
Paula Llovich Pena led the Lions with 17 points as she sank five three-pointers. Jailenn Green contributed 15 points while Amy Duggan added 14 points. Zoe O'Leary added 12 points and five rebounds.
