ST. AUGUSTINE –
Ella Gembicki's goal in the 30
th minute would be all of the offense Flagler College would need in a 2-0 win over Clayton State University in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Saints Field.
Flagler improved to 5-6-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the Peach Belt. Clayton State dropped to 3-7-1 overall and 2-5-0 in conference play. The Saints visit USC Aiken on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. kick off.
The first goal was started by a throw in, just in front of the Flagler bench. The Saints worked the ball down the field to
Ashley Wagner in the right corner. Her pass to the top of the box was deflected by a defender and went to Gembicki who ripped a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner of the goal.
Bella Faherty gave the Saints some insurance with a goal in the 64
th minute.
Haley Stafford dribbled the ball down deep near the end line and sent a pass into the box where Faherty tucked her shot inside the far-right post. That was her first goal in the Crimson & Gold and her first goal since 2023 when she played for Jacksonville University.
Phoebe Carpenter turned in her first collegiate clean sheet as she recorded one save. Rubie Kelley and Claire Smith split time in goal for Clayton State. Kelley had four saves while Smith finished with one.
Flagler out-shot Clayton State 12-3 and
Carrie Consolino had a match-high four shots. The Saints held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks and also led in fouls with 13.
