BLUFFTON, S.C. –
Mason Manning's two layups and a free throw in the final 10 seconds helped Flagler College erase a deficit and escape with an 84-83 win over USC Beaufort in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Sand Shark Recreation Center.
Flagler improved to 10-6 overall and 4-3 in the Peach Belt. USC Beaufort had its five-game winning streak snapped and fell to 13-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play. The Saints host Lander University on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Flagler Gym.
The Saints trailed by as many as six points late in the second half and were down by four (83-79) after a pair of free throws by Alejandro Ralat. Manning's first layup cut the deficit to two (83-81) with nine seconds to go. He was fouled on the play, but missed the free throw. Manning got his own rebound and scored on the put-back to tie the game. Again, he was followed on the shot so he had a chance at another old-fashioned three-point play. This time Manning sank the free throw to put the Saints up by one. He finished with 13 points. The Sand Sharks missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer.
The game was a tale of two halves. Flagler dominated the first half, shooting 54.3 percent from the field and limiting USCB to a 17.6 percent mark. The Sand Sharks only made six field goals in the first 20 minutes. The Saints held a 49-27 lead at the half and led by as many as 24. In the second half, the roles were reversed. USC Beaufort made 59.5 percent of its shots while Flagler made just 10 baskets and were held to a 35.7 percent mark.
Jax Bouknight scored a game-high 21 points and he made 9-of-10 from the free throw line. He tallied six assists.
Destin Clark added 16 points and nine rebounds while
Hoku Fisher finished with 13 points and six rebounds.
Josiah Shackelford contributed 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Dominic Eason scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Sand Sharks. Kenney Gaines added 17 points while Ralat chipped in 16 points.
