ST. AUGUSTINE – No. 2 (ITA Collegiate Division II rankings) Flagler College defeated No. 12 Wingate University 4-2 in a NCAA Division II Southeast Region No. 1 men's tennis match on a hot Tuesday afternoon at the Pollard Tennis Center.
Flagler extended its winning streak to 15 matches and improved to 19-2 overall. The Saints advance to the round of 16 for the third year in a row. The first round matches will be played on May 21 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida. Wingate's season ends with an 18-6 record.
Flagler trailed early after losing the doubles point and No. 1 singles. But
Simon Malis and
Philipp Lemken posted straight-set wins to tie the team score at 2-all.
Aly El Rafie took care of Federico Spinetta 7-5 and 6-4 to push the Saints one match away from clinching.
Baptiste Mercier, ranked No. 10 in the country, came through after splitting the first two sets to wrap up the match 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
The match was scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m., but due to the rain from last night and early in the morning moved the match to 2 p.m. A strong sun and a heat index that reached the mid-90s made it tough on both sides.
