GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Flagler College men's golf team finished in third place with a 28-under par 836 (272-280-284) at the Bearcat Classic, which wrapped up this afternoon at the Greenwood Country Club (par 72; 6,800 yards).
Flagler's first round 272 was the second-best score in program history, falling just two strokes from tying the record set in 2007. The 836 score was the second-best 54-hole score and the 28-under par was the second-best relative par score, falling three strokes shy of the 833 (-31) set in 2015 at the same tournament.
Tomas Cavanagh carded a 7-under 65 in the first round, which was the second-best individual round (strokes).
Joel Petersson turned in the fourth lowest score, a 10-under 206 (68-67-71), in program history, and his score relative to par was the fourth-best all-time.
No. 13 (Clippd Division II Top 25) Lander University and No. 5 Grand Valley State University tied for medalist honors as both finished with a 36-under 828 to head the 20-team field. No. 20 Barton College finished behind Flagler with a 26-under 838. Wingate University followed in fifth place with a 21-under 843.
Drew Coble of Grand Valley State finished atop the 106-man leaderboard. He carded a 13-under 203 (67-69-67). Linus Jonsson of Lander and Ryan Jahr of Barton each shot a 12-under 204. Nick Krueger of Grand Valley State finished in fourth place with an 11-under 205. There was a three-way tie for fifth place and two of those players were Saints – Petersson and Cavanagh.
Petersson finished with 13 birdies and 38 pars. Cavanagh finished with a 10-under 206 (65-69-72) was tied for eighth in the field with 15 birdies.
Nic Eberhard finished in a three-way tie for 12
th place. He shot a 7-under 209 (68-71-70). Eberhard had a pair of eagles in the first round. His average on the par-4s was a tournament-best 3.67.
Roo Fenwick finished in a tie for 40
th place with a 1-under 215 (71-73-71).
Abe Forsyth carded a 6-over 222 to finish in a tie for 66
th place.
Up next for the Saints is the Bobcat Invitational, March 18-19, at the Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee in Eatonton, Georgia.
