GREENWOOD, S.C. –
Jacopo Denitto's 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles won the match for No. 9 (ITA Collegiate Division II rankings) Flagler College as it edged No. 11 Lander University 4-3 in a Peach Belt Conference men's tennis match Saturday afternoon at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center.
Flagler improved to 13-5 overall and 4-1 in the Peach Belt. It was the first time the Saints won a match at Greenwood (1-7). Lander dropped to 14-3 overall as well as 3-2 in conference play.
The match started on Thursday but was unfinished due to rain. Flagler traveled back up to Lander to finish the match today.
The Bearcats took two-out-of-three in doubles to earn the team point.
Philipp Lemken and
Pavlos Parson won the lone doubles match at No. 2 for the Saints.
Flagler trailed 2-0 in the match until
Petr Cervinka and Lemken posted straight sets wins. Parson's win at No. 5 gave the Saints a 3-2 lead, but the Bearcats won No. 6 singles to knot the score at 3-all.
Flagler will take on No. 27 Augusta University on Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Flagler Tennis Center. Senior Day honors for the men will follow tomorrow's women's tennis match against Augusta, which starts at 10:30 a.m. Both teams will receive their championship rings from winning the PBC regular season crown last year.
