AUGUSTA, Ga. –
Omar Figueroa scored a game-high 21 points, but it wasn't enough as No. 18 (NABC Division II Top 25) Augusta University defeated Flagler College 85-75 in a Peach Belt Conference Men's Basketball Tournament quarterfinal game Thursday evening at the Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Flagler, the No. 7 seed in the tourney, finishes the season with a 13-17 record. Augusta, the No. 2 seed, improved to 24-5 and advances to the semifinal round at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow where it will face the winner of the North Georgia-Columbus State game.
The Jaguars used a 20-8 run over a 5-minute, 34-second span midway through the second half to pull away from the Saints. After a
Kyle Young short jumper cut Flagler's deficit to one (49-48) with 12:11 left in the game, Ja'Queze Kirby made a short jumper and a three-pointer to ignite the Augusta run. Kirby scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half.
Augusta used a 13-0 run midway through the first half, but Flagler chipped away and Figueroa's three-pointer with just three seconds left got the Saints to within five (35-30) at the break.
In the second half, Figueroa's layup with 13:27 left tied the game at 46. Figueroa scored 14 of his points in the second half and made five three-pointers in the game.
Young finished with 17 points while
Jaylen Lemons added 13 points and
Malik Bryant tallied 10 points.
Jax Bouknight contributed eight points, a career-high eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Tyree Myers led Augusta with 20 points, six assists and five rebounds. Kirby added six rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots to his line. David Viti came off the bench to provide 15 points. Tyshaun Crawford tacked on 12 points.
