Women's Soccer Earns Third Straight Win

ST. AUGUSTINE - The No. 20 ranked Flagler College women's soccer team edged the University of Tampa, 2-1, Tuesday night to earn its third straight win. Sophomore Andrea Fernandez scored both goals for the Saints in the victory.

"I couldn't be prouder of the team's desire and determination," said head coach Ashley Martin. "Tampa gave us a great game and put an enormous amount of pressure on us in the second half."

The Saints (4-1-2) started off the match putting high pressure on the Spartan defense, taking six shots to Tampa's two shots in the first half. In the 29th minute, Elke Fernandez drove a long ball from the left sideline towards the right corner of the box, setting up Andrea Fernandez perfectly as she scored to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

Tampa (4-4-1) flipped the script in the second half and attacked Flagler's side of the pitch taking seven shots. The Spartans' Madison McElhone received a forward pass from Emily Floyd, pulling Madison North out of the goal to tie the game 1-1 on an open goal in the 69th minute.

With under six minutes remaining in the game, Andrea Fernandez was awarded a penalty kick after being fouled in Tampa's box. Fernandez faked left, throwing off Tampa's keeper and sent the ball into the low right corner of the net for the game-winning goal to set the score 2-1.

The Saints held the advantage in shots (12-9) and shots on goal (6-4), while the Spartans had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Megan Hessle made four saves for Tampa while North had three saves in the net for Flagler.

Flagler hits the road for a conference match at Georgia College & State University Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. in Milledgeville, Georgia.
