GREENWOOD, S.C. –
Malik Bryant and
Jaylen Lemons combined to score 44 points to help lead Flagler College to an 88-73 victory over Southern Wesleyan University in a men's basketball game in the Southeast Challenge Friday afternoon at the Finis Horne Arena.
Flagler improved to 1-2 on the season and
Blake Selland posted his first victory as head coach. Southern Wesleyan lost its home opener. The Saints take on Anderson University tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.
"I am extremely proud of our guys tonight," said Selland. "That's a tough game to play in and we just kept fighting to the end. We had multiple guys step up and that's been our mindset all preseason."
Bryant scored 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field and added seven rebounds to go along with three steals. Lemons scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half. He sank five 3-pointers. Omar Figueroa tacked on nine points. Kyle Young contributed eight points, eight rebounds and had three steals as well as three assists. Tyler Collier added seven points and grabbed eight rebounds. Jax Bouknight tallied five assists.
The Saints knocked down 15-of-20 free throw attempts and made 11-of-14 in the second half alone.
Jamal Edmonson led the Warriors with 18 points and six rebounds. Wilvens Fleurizard added 16 points and seven rebounds.
Southern Wesleyan was limited to 5-of-23 shooting from 3-point range.
The Saints held a 37-31 lead at the half and used a 24-7 run that covered a seven-minute span early in the second half to put the game away. Chase Fiddler's layup with 8:15 left gave Flagler its largest lead of the game, 73-51.
