ST. AUGUSTINE - The Flagler College men's soccer team upset No. 12 Lander University, 1-0, Saturday evening with a late second-half goal by
Liam Fisch. The Saints stretched their win streak to four while snapping the Bearcats' five-game win streak.
"As expected today was a battle against a very strong conference opponent," said interim head coach
Thomas Coombes. "This team has a never say die attitude and they believed in one another until the very end and we got our reward with a brilliant goal in the second half. We are excited to have the opportunity to host and we hope to keep this momentum going for as long as we can!"
The match was a battle of possession, with neither team able to hold the ball long enough to get a good shot off. Lander (9-3-4, 8-1-2 PBC) had three shots in the first half, while Flagler took one shot.
The Saints (9-3-3, 8-2-2 PBC) notched the game-winning goal in the 81st minute after Fisch launched the ball from just inside the box on a feed from
Jesse van Krimpen.
Lander had the advantage in shots (10-4), shots on goal (6-3) and corner kicks (6-4).
Tirso Trueba had a strong day in the net for Flagler, making six stops to earn his fifth shutout of the season.
