Saints split two matches to open season

ST. AUGUSTINE – Rachel Machovec collected 14 kills and added 12 digs as Flagler College split its first two matches of the Flagler Saints Invitational on Friday at Flagler Gymnasium. The Saints won the opener, 3-1, over Belmont Abbey College and then fell to No. 6 (AVCA Division II Top 25) Lewis University by the same score.

Flagler closes out the tournament tomorrow with matches against Valdosta State University (1 p.m.) and Eckerd College (7:30 p.m.).

In the opener, Logan Garcia finished with a team-high 10 kills to go along with a .500 hitting percentage. She also added three total blocks. Jordan Berglin made her collegiate debut with nine kills and seven digs. She tacked on three aces and three total blocks to her line. Kennedy Muff tallied a match-high 34 assists and added seven kills, seven digs, and three total blocks. Victoria Bowerson added six kills and seven digs. Rebekah Machovec paced the defense with 11 digs.

Lauren Hamilton led the Crusaders with a match-high 12 kills and finished with a .280 hitting percentage. Paige Rawlins tallied 32 assists and Hailey Ryan collected 20 digs.

In the second match, the Saints faced the nationally ranked Flyers. Rachel Machovec finished with a double-double as she recorded 10 kills and 10 digs. She added two total blocks. Muff also notched a double-double with 28 assists and 11 digs. Edie Lamoreaux paced the defense with a career-high 19 digs. Bowrosen finished with four aces.

The Saints lost the first set 25-20 but won an exciting second set 30-28. There were 14 ties and four lead changes. Flagler fought off two set points and broke a 28-all tie with kills from Muff and Bowerson.

Juliana Van Loo and ava Venema led a balanced Lewis attack with 15 kills apiece. Megan Schlechte and Amanda Greening each added 12 kills. Schlechte completed the double-double with 14 digs. Lauren Stenman tallied 43 assists and 14 digs while Jamie Poppen collected 36 digs.
