Flagler sweeps Georgia College and extends win streak to four

ST. AUGUSTINE – Rebekah Machovec tied her season high with 17 kills and completed her fourth double-double with 10 digs as Flagler College swept Georgia College (25-19, 25-17, 25-22) in a Peach Belt Conference match Tuesday night at Flagler Gymnasium.

Flagler won its fourth consecutive match and improved to 13-3 overall and 11-1 in the Peach Belt. The Saints have won 12 sets in a row. Flagler has also clinched a spot in the conference tournament as well as a home match in the semifinals on April 21. Georgia College had its two-match winning streak snapped and fell to 5-6 overall and in conference play.

"I loved the physicality and toughness we showed right from the start with our attacking on the pins and the service pressure we put on their passers," said head coach Matt Affolder. "Just as our first match versus Georgia College, you can look at the stats and think that we didn't cause many problems with our serves due to the lack of aces, but the speed and pressure that we put on them was forcing them out of system the entire match."

Kennedy Muff recorded her team-best sixth double-double with 38 assists and 11 digs. Logan Garcia finished with eight kills and hit .400 to go along with three total blocks. Victoria Bowrosen added seven kills. Karolina Garstka had 10 digs.

"Cameron (Fenner), Sarah Kate (Thompson), and Edie (Lamoreaux) were outstanding tonight with their service point scoring and serve physicality," said Affolder. "This was a tremendous match for Rebekah as she was bouncy and high above the net for some great swings, and I like how she used the entire floor for her kill production. I think we showed once again that we have a determined defensive team, and I especially like how we executed our adjustments from play to play."

Libby Bochniak led the Bobcats with six kills, six digs, and five total blocks. Sarah Mangan added six kills and four block assists. Lauren Talele tallied 24 assists and had eight digs. Jordyn Moellering collected 10 digs.

In the first set, Flagler used a 5-0 run to break open a 10-all tie. Bowrosen bookended the spurt with a pair of kills and Garcia added another along with as pair of hitting errors by Georgia College. Machovec had six kills and four digs in the set for the Saints. Garcia hit .667 with four kills on six errorless swings.

Flagler broke an 8-all tie in the second set with a 9-1 run. A kill by Bowrosen sparked the spurt. The Saints were balanced in their attack with six players having two or three kills. Muff tallied nine assists and had six digs.

The last set featured eight ties and six lead changes. With the score knotted at 20, Cameron Fenner served up an ace, a kill by Machovec, and a block by Garcia gave Flagler a 23-20 lead. A hitting by Georgia College gave the Saints match point, but the Bobcats were able to fight off the end of the match for two points, but a Bowrosen kill finished it. Machovec recorded eight kills and hit .438 with just one error on 16 attempts.

Flagler ventures out on the road for its final two matches of conference play, starting with Friday's match at UNC Pembroke.

"We are excited to hit the road for this final conference weekend, and we know UNC Pembroke is fighting for a spot in the conference tournament," said Affolder.
