PEMBROKE, N.C. –
Victoria Bowrosen paced a balanced attack with 10 kills and
Kennedy Muff nearly recorded a triple-double as Flagler College defeated UNC Pembroke 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-17, 25-21) in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Friday night at the Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
Flagler extends its winning streak to five matches and improved to 14-3 overall and 12-1 in the Peach Belt. UNC Pembroke dropped to 6-6 overall and in conference play.
"We knew Pembroke would be a different team at home and with their big right side back in the lineup, as she didn't play in our first meeting," said head coach
Matt Affolder. "The flow of the match hinged on our serving as we were definitely in control when their passers struggled, but they found good offensive rhythm when we didn't stress their passers."
Muff recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 34 assists and 13 digs. She flirted with a triple-double as she had eight kills and finished with a .471 hitting percentage.
Rebekah Machovec added nine kills, nine digs, and two total blocks.
Lindsay Glynn finished with nine kills and three total blocks.
Logan Garcia contributed eight kills and had four total blocks.
Sarah Kate Thompson had three aces and
Karolina Garstka led the defense with 18 digs.
"Lindsay had a great match both from kill production and the way she defended at the net," said Affolder. "Kennedy once again showed great poise and her set location was really on. The impact she has on each rally with her ability to score and distribute makes our team very hard to defend. I thought Karolina showed how she can cause major issues with her serve, as well as her toughness on defense."
Kaila Crowder led the Braves with 11 kills, and she completed the double-double with 12 digs. Shannon Skryd also recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs. Katie Pressley tallied 22 assists and 12 digs while Erin O'Donnell had five total blocks.
Flagler used an 8-0 run in the first set to take a commanding 17-6 lead. Glynn had a pair of kills in the spurt. She hit .600 in the set. Bowrosen led the Saints with four kills.
The second set saw seven ties and five lead changes. The Braves used a 6-0 run to take a 21-13 lead. Later, an
Edie Lamoreaux ace got Flagler to within two (23-21), but a pair of kills by Brianna Warren gave UNCP the victory in that set. Crowder led the Braves with four kills.
In the third set, Flagler erased an 8-7 UNC Pembroke lead with a 11-0 run. Garcia had a kill and a pair of block assists in the run.
The Saints led the entire fourth set, but the lead was never any larger than five points. The Braves had recorded three consecutive kills to cut their deficit to 21-19, which prompted a Saints timeout. Machovec's kill coming out of the timeout and a hitting error by the Braves pushed the lead back out to four. Glynn's kill ended the match for the Saints.
"This was a great test and we are excited to get a tough road win," said Affolder. "Now we can rest and regroup to prepare for Francis Marion and the opportunity to win the regular season conference title."
Flagler heads to Florence, South Carolina to take on Francis Marion University tomorrow at 3 p.m.
