ST. AUGUSTINE –
Rebekah Machovec and
Victoria Bowrosen each had nine kills as Flagler College swept Lander University (25-14, 25-20, 25-12) in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler improved to 12-3 overall and 10-1 in the Peach Belt. Lander lost its seventh match in a row and fell to 1-8 overall and in conference play.
"Just as we did last night, I loved the mentality the team had from the first serve as we established a level of physicality and energy for the match," said head coach
Matt Affolder. "Kennedy (Muff) had a great match from a location and tempo standpoint, as she was locked in on finding hitters in transition. Tori once again had a bounce in her step and really ripped some shots, and her serving was also very physical and caused Lander issues. This was a great match by our backrow defense crew – Edie (Lamoreaux), Karolina (Garstka), and Sarah Kate (Thompson) were very tenacious and had some great touches to extend rallies."
Bowrosen hit a career-high .389 for the match as she had only two errors on 18 swings.
Logan Garcia finished with seven kills and a season-high seven total blocks.
Kennedy Muff tallied 30 assists and added eight digs as well as three block assists.
Karolina Garstka collected 14 digs.
Sarah Kate Thompson had three aces.
Deona Mims led the Bearcats with seven kills while Christina Aguayo added six more. Aguayo led the team with 12 digs. Madilyn Reed tallied 18 assists and had seven digs.
Lander was limited to a -.009 hitting percentage.
The Saints raced out to an 8-1 lead in the first set and coasted to a 25-14 win. Machovec and Garcia each had three kills for the Saints. Garcia had a .600 hitting percentage.
Flagler held a 12-5 lead in the second set only to have Lander rally back and take a 15-14 lead on a double-block by Aguayo and Madison Smith. Tied at 20,
Lindsay Glynn's kill sparked a 5-0 spurt by the Saints to close out the set. Machovec had five kills for the Saints while Mims had four for the Bearcats.
The Saints jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the third set and rolled to a 25-12 win. Bowrosen recorded five kills for the Saints and hit a sizzling .571.
Prior to the start of the match, the Saints honored their three seniors:
Lindsay Glynn,
Jordan Taylor, and
Karlie Redfern.
"On an individual personal note, it was awesome to hear
Karlie Redfern's name announced in the starting lineup and see her out there digging some balls," said Affolder. "It made the entire coaching staff and team smile to see her out there finishing out the match with her teammates. This senior class has won multiple championships and helped our program establish itself as one of the top teams in the region. I'm thankful to each of them for their dedication and commitment to the program, their love and support for teammates, and their hard work and willingness to learn and be coached."
Flagler plays its final regular season home match on Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Georgia College.
