FLORENCE, S.C. –
Myles Colangelo's pinch hit ground-rule double in the seventh inning broke a 2-all tie and helped Flagler College go on to defeat Francis Marion 6-2 in the second game of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Sparrow Stadium. Francis Marion won the first game, 5-2.
Flagler, who won the series, improved to 8-18 overall and 7-13 in the Peach Belt. The Saints have won the last four-of-five games against the Patriots. Francis Marion dropped to 12-11 overall and 10-11 in conference play.
In game two,
Chase Carney led off the top of the seventh with a single and was sacrificed over to second on a bunt by
Donovan Garcia. That's when Colangelo broke the tie with his ground-rule double, on the first pitch he saw, which plated Carney.
The Saints were not done as they added three more runs in the eighth. Garcia had the big hit of the inning, a two-run single that gave Flagler a 6-2 lead.
Nick Phifer (1-0) earned his first collegiate win after tossing three scoreless innings in relief. He scattered three hits and struck out a batter.
Daniel Fischer started and fanned five batters in four scoreless innings.
Garcia paced the 12-hit attack with three singles and had two runs batted in.
Adam Mitchell singled twice and scored two runs while Carney had a pair of base hits, scored two runs, and drove in another.
Christian Umphlett (1-1) took the loss in relief for Francis Marion. In 2 2/3 innings of work, he allowed one run on two hits and walked two batters, including one intentionally.
Tanner Wakefield went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Bill Hanna had two singles and scored a run.
In the opener, the Patriots used a four-run sixth to break a 1-all tie and went on to a 5-2 victory.
Kolby Crepeau hit a bases-clearing double in the sixth.
That's all Weston Rogers (3-3) needed as he scattered seven hits and allowed one run in six innings of work. Reece Kleinhelter earned his first save of the season after tossing the last three frames.
Todd Mattox collected a pair of singles, scored a run, and knocked in a pair of runs.
Kyle Morton (1-4) went the distance for the Saints. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Mitchell, Carney, and
John Fiorenza all had two singles apiece. Carney and Fiorenza scored Flagler's two runs.
Flagler hosts Claflin University on Friday (April 9) at 6 p.m. at Drysdale Field in a Peach Belt Conference tilt.
