ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Due to rain moving back-to-back men's tennis matches at the Flagler Tennis Center Saturday, No. 14 Flagler College women's tennis team had to move its home regular-season finale to a neutral location.
The Saints powered through the unexpected change, though, as they won their fifth straight and seventh conference match of the year versus No. 16-ranked University of North Georgia in a 5-2 Peach Belt Conference victory three miles down the road at Treaty Park. The win solidified the No. 2 seed for Flagler in the PBC Tournament, which will begin the week of April 26.
"It was a very challenging day today," Flagler head coach
Rodrigo Puebla said. "Due to weather, we had to make some arrangements and play at Treaty Park. It was hard for our team not being able to play the last regular-season match at home, but they were able to take this challenge and turn it into a positive thing. We played the best doubles that we had all year. UNG is a well-coached team and the Nighthawks competed very well. With this win, we secure the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament and are looking forward to play the first round at the Flagler Tennis Center."
This much-anticipation match started with the Saints (13-4, 7-1 PBC) taking the doubles point for the third consecutive match as
Alessandra Traub/
Florencia Massardo Brain won their eighth of the last nine and
Eden Schlagenhauf/ Martinez secured the victory, with both winning 7-5.
Luisa Hrda/ Vossgaetter's match was unfinished.
Flagler took the point lead and added onto with No. 31-ranked Hrda's fifth straight win, while Traub won her second in as many days as did No. 24-ranked Schlagenhauf with a tie-breaking set one to take the straight-set win (fifth straight) and clinch the massive match for Flagler. In her first match since April 3,
Anika Nissen battled back from a one-set loss and took the No. 5 singles' win to cap the fifth point compared the two for North Georgia (11-3, 6-2).
