ST. AUGUSTINE –
Donovan Garcia drove in the eventual game-winning run in the seventh inning as Flagler College won the opening game of the doubleheader, 4-3, over Georgia College, but lost the second game 8-0 Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Flagler is now 9-20 overall and 8-15 in the Peach Belt Conference. Georgia College leaves with a 17-16 overall record and a 15-14 mark in conference play.
In the opener, the Bobcats scored three runs in the first inning, two of those on back-to-back home runs by Cal Gentry and Cassius Young.
Flagler starter
Kyle Morton (2-4) settled in and retired 13-of-14 batters and only allowed five base runners after the first inning. He went the distance and allowed three runs and six hits to go along with eight strikeouts.
The Saints got to Georgia College starter Jacob Hester in the fifth.
Garrett Wilt drew a leadoff walk and
John Fiorenza followed by belting the first pitch he saw over the left-center field wall.
Jake Kaufman added a double, was bunted over to third, and then scored on a groundout to tie the game.
Ashton Thomas led off the seventh with a walk, took second on a sacrifice bunt, and then went to third on a groundout. That's when Garcia knocked Thomas in with the go-ahead run on a single to left-center. Garcia went 3-for-3 with the one run batted in.
Brennan Crooms (1-4) took the loss in relief for Georgia College. He allowed one run on three hits in three innings of work. He walked three batters and one of those produced the winning Flagler run.
Noah Mendlinger went 2-for-3 with a double and he scored a run for the Bobcats.
In the second game, Georgia College plated three runs in the first inning and never looked back.
Bryson Smeltzer (2-0) started and was one of four Bobcats to pitch. He tossed five scoreless innings and scattered four hits. Smeltzer struck out five batters.
Young collected three singles, scored a run, and drove in another. Gentry went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, and he scored two runs.
Daniel Fischer (1-1) allowed three earned runs on seven hits in his second start of the season. He tossed 4 1/3 innings and fanned three.

Christian O'Kelly, and
Zach Audet worked in relief.
Myles Colangelo and
Chase Carney each had two singles.
Flagler hosts Claflin University on Monday, at 6 p.m., at Drysdale Field in a Peach Belt Conference game.
