Saints honor seniors with Young Harris sweep

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — It was the perfect Senior Day for the No. 14 Flagler College women's tennis team as the Saints honored Paloma Martinez and Amelie Vossgaetter with a 7-0 sweep of Young Harris College at the Flagler Tennis Center Friday.

The win also signified the Saints' fourth straight victory and sixth overall sweep of the season, including the fourth in Peach Belt Conference play to improve to 12-4 and 6-1 in the PBC.

"Today was an emotional day for our program," Flagler head coach Rodrigo Puebla said. "We honored not only two great players but amazing individuals. Amelie and Paloma have been great additions to this Flagler College women's tennis program and have helped achieved great things in the last few years.

"I was very happy with the way we came out and play today on Senior Day. It was nice to be playing at home again after a long couple of weeks. We were aggressive from the first point, and I believe our doubles are starting to click and play better tennis. We need to keep playing this way and tomorrow will be a great test against a great North Georgia team."

The Saints will host the University of North Georgia in their regular-season finale at 10:30 p.m. back at "The Fort," beginning at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

In doubles, Alessandra Traub/Florencia Massardo Brain won their seventh of the last eight to get the Saints rocking, while Eden Schlagenhauf/ Martinez secured the victory — with a 6-0 win like the No. 2 doubles — and Luisa Hrda/ Vossgaetter capped the doubles' sweep with their first as a pair.

Hrda took the lead and added onto it with a straight-set victory on court one as she won her fourth in a row. From there, the seniors were next with a win apiece. Martinez took back-to-back sets for her third consecutive win and Vossgaetter hauled in her eighth-straight win to clinch on the special day for the seniors. Schlagenhauf won her second in as many matches, while Massardo Brain secured her eighth-straight win alike Vossgaetter, and Traub rallied back for a three-set win to get back on track in singles and secure the sweep of the Mountain Lions (1-13, 0-7).
