FLORENCE, S.C. — Within a span of six minutes, the Flagler College men's soccer team took a goal deficit and turned it into a one-goal lead for the 2-1 overtime Peach Belt Conference win at Francis Marion University Monday night.
"The team showed great character throughout the game," Flagler head coach
Chris Kranjc said. "We had multiple chances but didn't connect. Even when we went down a goal, the team believed and never gave up. The guys deserved it, and I am very happy for them."
The Patriots (2-2-2, 1-2-2) held a goal lead from the 57th minute on until Flagler's
Joran Osland netted a free kick in the 88th minute to force overtime. Then, It only took nearly five minutes into the overtime period for the Saints (1-2-1, 1-2-1 PBC) and
Matteo Costa to complete the come-from-behind victory.
The Italian midfielder got the ball via a double-assist that stemmed from
Peik Koskinen through the middle, and then received the perfect touch from
Axel Nolgren to go into the possession of a sprinting Costa. From there, he dribbled upfield to the right of the box before cutting back and placing the ball into the left corner for the game winner and his first of the season.
Flagler's two goals were the lone on goal; however, the Saints out-shot the Patriots, 10-8, as FMU's second shot on goal was saved by goalkeeper
Andrea Lubbia. The Saints also had seven corner kicks to the Patriots' four.
