ST. AUGUSTINE –
Derrick Ellis, Jr. poured in a season-high 20 points as No. 10 (NABC Division II Top 25) Flagler College defeated USC Aiken 76-62 in a Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinal game Thursday night at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler extended its winning streak to 12 games and improved to 14-2 overall. The Saints will host the conference tournament final on Sunday at 4 p.m. against either No. 25 Georgia College or Georgia Southwestern State University. USC Aiken concludes the season with a 9-8 record.
"I am really excited for an opportunity to play for the tournament championship on our home floor," said head coach
Chad Warner. "I thought our team really competed and defended tonight."
A 12-0 spurt by Flagler midway through the first half broke a 16-all tie.
Jaizec Lottie scored 10 of those points for the Saints.
Flagler never trailed again and held at 37-29 lead at the half. The lead swelled to as many 19 (70-51) with just under three minutes to go in the game.
The Pacers used a 10-1 run late to cut the deficit to 10 (71-61) after a Donaven Hairston layup, but they could not get any closer.
Ellis, Jr. made 6-of-11 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. He grabbed six rebounds and tallied four assists.
"I thought that was the best game Derrick has played for us and we needed it," said Warner. "Our seniors will have to be big down the stretch and I know Jaizec and Chris (Metzger) will be."
Lottie recorded his third double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. He scored 15 in the first half alone.
Jalen Barr added 16 points, eight rebounds, and a season-high five steals.
The Saints forced 22 Pacer turnovers and converted those into 26 points. Flagler also dominated in the paint outscoring USC Aiken 42-22.
Anyeuri Castillo led the Pacers with 14 points while Hairston came off the bench to provide 13 more. Tehree Horn added 12 points, five assists, and four rebounds. Latreavin Black grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
