VALDOSTA, Ga. –
Jaizec Lottie made a school-record 10 three-pointers and finished with a game-high 35 points to help lead No. 8 (NABC Division II Top 25) Flagler College to an 89-75 win over No. 12 The University of Alabama in Huntsville in the NCAA Division II South Region championship game Tuesday night at The Complex on the campus of Valdosta State University.
Flagler (17-2) punches its first-ever ticket to the elite eight and carries a 15-game winning streak to Evansville, Indiana. The tournament runs from March 24-27. UAH (15-4), the No. 2 seed in the region, lost for the second time in three games to conclude the season. Other teams who have advanced to the elite eight are: West Liberty University, Northwest Missouri State University, Lincoln Memorial University, West Texas A&M University, Daemen College, Truman State University, and the Colorado School of Mines.
Lottie was selected as the tournament's most outstanding player. He made 10-of-21 from three-point range and was 11-of-23 from the field. Lottie also grabbed nine rebound and tallied five assists.
The Saints used a 13-2 spurt midway through the second half to pull away from the Chargers.
Chris Metzger's layup tied the game at 51 with 10:19 left and
Chase Fiddler sank a three-pointer to give Flagler a 54-51 lead. The Saints never trailed again.
Flagler's lead would swell to as many as 16 late in the second half.
The Saints shot a blistering 61.5 percent from the field in the second half and knocked down 9-of-16 from three-point range in the final 20 minutes.
Marcus Henderson added 17 points while Fiddler finished with 13.
Jalen Barr contributed 11 points and nine rebounds.
Chris Metzger, who was named to the all-tournament team, chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds.
Derrick Ellis, Jr. tallied a game-high six assists.
Sam Orf, an all-tournament honoree, led UAH with 27 points and he added seven rebounds. Kerney Lane, Seth Swalve, and Max Shulman each contributed 12 points. Lane added six rebounds and five assists to his line. JJ Kaplan supplied 10 points and six boards.
The Chargers were limited to 37.5 percent shooting from the field, including a 34.5 percent clip in the first half.
Flagler will find out who they will face next in the NCAA Division II National Tournament in the coming days.
