Mathis pours in a career-high 27 points, Saints top Sailfish

ST. AUGUSTINE – Jaziana Mathis poured in a career-high 27 points to lead Flagler College to an 85-64 win over Palm Beach Atlantic University in a non-conference women's basketball game Monday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.

Flagler improved to 6-3 on the season and the win today avenged a 77-70 loss at PBA on Nov. 22. The Sailfish lost their fourth consecutive game and dropped to 2-7.

"I was proud of our ladies' defensive effort today," said head coach Mo Smith. "I thought it was our most complete game, on the defensive end of the floor, so far this season. Offensively, I thought our ball movement was good and we were able to hit some shots. Certainly, this is something we can build from going forward."

Mathis scored five points in Flagler's 7-0 spurt midway through the second quarter. Her layup and additional free throw with 5:38 left in the second quarter started the run as the Saints lead later swelled to 10. Flagler took a 40-33 lead into the half.

The Saints held a double-figure lead for the majority of the second half, including a 26-point lead (78-52) with 5:27 left in the game.

Tori Pearce recorded her team-leading fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and she tied her career-high with 10 assists. Sophie VanDyke tied her career-high with 10 points to go along with three blocked shots. Miracle Parker had a pair of season-highs with nine points and three blocked shots. Taylor Gardner grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Flagler forced 20 PBA turnovers and converted those into 19 points. The Saints shot 50.7 percent from the field, the second-highest percentage so far this year.

Jahnae Midget led Palm Beach Atlantic with 14 points while Kash Ayuso added 10 points, eight rebounds, and had three steals.

Flagler hosts Nova Southeastern University on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
