ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — After both regular-season matchups with Georgia Southwestern were decided by one goal, the Flagler College men's soccer team didn't leave a close window open in this one.
The fourth-seeded Saints took the lead in the 13th minute and never looked back as they shutout the fifth-seeded Hurricanes, 3-0, in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament at Saints Field. With the win, Flagler (10-7) advances to face top-seeded Young Harris Friday at Blanchard Woods Park located in Evans, Georgia, beginning at 11 a.m., while the loss ends GSW's season at 6-9-1.
"We played a very good game tonight against a really tough and organized Georgia Southwestern team," Flagler head coach
Chris Kranjc said. "Defensively, we were strong throughout the game and converted our chances when we needed. Overall, a great team effort and look forward to Friday."
Matteo Costa, the team's leading scorer, got the Saints on the board first in the 13th minute as
Joeran Osland's cornerkick send rolled off his head and into the net for his 18th goal of the season. Seven minutes later, Osland was on the scoring end with a free kick that flied up and over the wall and into the net to put Flagler ahead two scores early.
The Saints didn't score again until the 86th minute — via
Paul Hansen's first in a Flagler kit thanks to an
Al Cooper assist — while goalkeeper
Andrea Lubbia kept the Hurricanes scoreless. In his third shutout of the season, Lubbia had two saves behind a shout Saints' defense.
Offensively, Flagler led the Hurricanes with 16 shots to their eight as 12 were on goal to just two for GSW.
