ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — The Flagler College men's soccer team sent its 11 seniors off in style Wednesday night as the Saints kept winning with a 3-2 Peach Belt Conference victory over Georgia Southwestern University on Senior Night at Saints Field.
"Happy for our team in getting its fifth straight win," Flagler head coach
Chris Kranjc said. "It was a great way for our seniors to go out with a win. It is always a tough game with GSW and we found a way to win. The last three were tough wins, but really proud of what we have done to this point."
Before notching their fifth straight victory, the Saints (9-6, 7-4 PBC) honored
Andrea Lubbia,
Joeran Osland,
Fannar Fjolnisson,
Felipe Giesen-Linssen,
Zech Dapaah,
Eden Shachar,
Al Cooper,
Ian Spetnagel,
Christian Wnuk,
Carson Sapp, and
Matteo Costa for all they have given to the men's soccer program.
A pair of seniors — Costa and Lubbia — had themselves a senior night as Costa netted two goals and Lubbia conceded a pair of goals, but had a brilliant save midst to keep the Saints ahead. Overall, the Saints out-shot the Hurricanes 14-to-9 with nine on goal to GSW's four.
Flagler answered an early Hurricanes' goal — via Cole Davison — with three consecutive to take the lead for good. The first was a beauty as
Marc Birkelund pushed a through ball between a trio of defenders and found Costa for his first score as he sprinted by everyone to send the equalizer by the keeper in the 29-minute mark.
Five minutes out of halftime,
Jonas Schmitt netted the go-ahead score as he took a ricocheted Costa save from the keeper and put it home for his first score of the season. Thirty minutes later, Costa scored his team-leading 17th goal with a stunner. The Italian midfielder topped his senior night with a flick past the Hurricanes' keeper and defenders 30 yards out, racing by them all and scoring into an empty night.
GSW (6-8-1, 4-7-1) scored four minutes later via Grant Auer; however, Lubbia and the Saints kept the Hurricanes at bay the rest of the way to secure their fifth straight win heading into the regular-season finale at Lander Saturday (3 p.m.).
