ST. AUGUSTINE –
Jaizec Lottie scored 21 of his game-high 30 points in the second half as Flagler College knocked off No. 10 (NABC/Division II Top 25) Augusta University 70-64 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Peach Belt. The win snapped an eight-game losing streak against Augusta. Augusta suffered its first loss of the season and dropped to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
"I am really proud of the way our team finished," said head coach
Chad Warner. "There were a lot of plays made by a lot of people. Augusta plays as hard as any team we go against. They are well-coached and tough."
The Jaguars held a 64-62 lead with 1:27 left to go in the game after a Lee Flenor five-foot jumper. That would be the last points Augusta would score. The Jaguars missed their last three field goals as well as two free throw attempts.
The Saints took advantage and closed the game on an 8-0 run. Lottie tied the game with a pair of free throws with 1:16 left and then put Flagler ahead with two more makes from the charity stripe with 41 seconds left.
Marcus Henderson came up with a big rebound with 27 seconds left off a missed 3-pointer by Tyree Myers. He was subsequently fouled and drained both free throws.
Derrick Ellis, Jr. sealed the deal with a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left.
Lottie made 9-of-15 from the field and sank three 3-pointers. He added seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Lottie sank 9-of-12 from the free throw line. Ellis finished with 13 points.
Flenor recorded a double-double for the Jaguars with 19 points and he grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds. Darren Lucas-White added 15 points.
Flagler will go out on the road and face Columbus State University on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
NOTES: The last time Flagler beat a team ranked this high was on Jan. 5, 2011 against No. 3 Augusta, 76-70, in overtime, at Flagler Gymnasium…The last time the Saints beat a ranked team was Dec. 17, 2016, a 97-82 win over No. 25 Columbus State, also at Flagler Gymnasium.
