VALDOSTA, Ga. — Wednesday wasn't for the Saints.
After falling to No. 15-ranked Valdosta State University in a non-conference doubleheader, 5-2 and 8-0, at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park, the Flagler College softball team will aim to bounce back Saturday in Peach Belt Conference home play versus Augusta University beginning at noon.
Heading into the PBC matchup, Flagler (18-8) has won the last seven of nine games and is undefeated (2-0) in conference so far. Saturday's game will also be in honor of current softball player
Anna Dumovich, who is fighting stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma, as she will throw out the first pitch and her teammates will wear purple.
On Wednesday, the Saints fiercely fought back in the opening game versus VSU (18-5). The Blazers scored five runs over the first two innings, but Flagler didn't back down.
Kyra Gipson (L, 11-4) stayed true and didn't allow another run while her offense found some life.
Maria Kappos was able to get the Saints on the board as she busted a home run over the left-field wall, scoring
Jamie Greenwood, who pitch hit for
Kyleigh Taylor after a single, but those pair of runs are all Flagler was able to muster.
Paige Maseda,
Morgan Murphy (double),
Brittney Rayfield, and
Alyssa Velez all recorded hits, too, as those six hits highlight Flagler's day at the plate following a tough second, five-inning game two.
