ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — The No. 12 Flagler College women's tennis team is heading into its nine-day break the right way: victorious.
Following a 6-1 win over University of Texas at Tyler (3-7) Wednesday at the Flagler Tennis Center, the Saints (8-4) have won their last six of seven matches with one of those being a sweep. Flagler will be back in action when it welcomes Francis Marion University at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 21 for its second Peach Belt Conference matchup.
"It was very important to finish this stretch of play with a good win today," Flagler women's head coach
Rodrigo Puebla said. "The girls were getting a little tired after playing seven matches in 12 days, but they pulled through and gained some more confidence. Now, we can recover and be ready for the second part of our season."
The pairing of
Eden Schlagenhauf/
Lixin Wang secured its second straight win in doubles to improve 5-2 on the season behind a 6-1 win, while
Anika Nissen and
Florencia Massardo Brain teamed up for the consecutive match to snag the doubles point, and then the duo of
Paloma Martinez/
Alessandra Traub won its 10th in doubles.
Nissen didn't miss a beat in singles play as she soared to a set-straight, 6-0, sweep for her fifth straight win, while Schlagenhauf kept her momentum going with back-to-back wins and Massardo Brain clinched the match as she battled for her fourth straight singles victory. Without a doubt, Wang continued on her roll with the sixth consecutive win and Martinez fought en route to a three-set victory.
Amelie Vossgaetter clawed back from a set-one deficit before falling just shy of the three-set win.
