ST. AUGUSTINE – Trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, Flagler College was able to push across two runs to come away with a 3-2 victory over the University of Tampa Friday afternoon at Flagler Field. The game is part of the weekend long Old Coast Classic.
Courtney Robinson led off the bottom of the sixth for Flagler (4-1) with a walk and
Natalie Murphy hit a double to right-center to chase Tampa reliever Jodi Handler (0-1).
Kyleigh Taylor greeted the new pitcher, Corynn Miner, with a fly out to left field, which was deep enough to score Robinson from third to tie the game and Murphy took third on the throw.
Maria Kappos reached first on a bunt single to plate Murphy with the go-ahead run.
Tampa (3-3) threatened in the seventh with runners at second and third with one out. Cristina Clauberg hit a ground ball to Kappos at shortstop, who then threw out Emily Profitt trying to score from third base.
Kyra Gipson (4-0) got the last batter to pop up to Kappos to end the game.
Gipson scattered five hits and allowed two runs to pick up the win. She fanned five batters and retired eight batters on fly outs as well as eight more on groundouts.
Natalie Murphy went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Taylor hit a double and
Paige Maseda hit an RBI triple in the third inning.
Handler allowed two runs, including the game-winner, on one hit to get the loss. Mariah Galhouse tossed four innings to start the game and surrendered a run on four hits.
Maddie Farrell collected two singles and drove in both runs for the Spartans.
Flagler hosts Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at 5:30 p.m. today.
