ST. AUGUSTINE –
Madelyn Wise (1-0) turned in a solid performance in the circle and Flagler College had just enough offense to get by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University 2-1 Friday afternoon at Flagler Field. The game was part of the weekend-long Old Coast Classic.
Wise struck out a season-high six batters and induced 10 ground outs as well as four more fly outs. She retired 14 of the first 20 batters in the game.
Wise wiggled out of trouble in the sixth where she allowed an unearned run. With runners at second and third with one out, and the Saints leading 2-1, she got Lauren Latoria to hit a ground ball to
Natalie Murphy at first base who fired to third to pickoff Jamie Mead. Wise got the next batter to fly out.
Flagler (5-1) got single tallies in the third and fourth innings.
Maria Kappos hit an RBI single in the third and
Paige Maseda had a squeeze bunt in the fourth inning to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.
The Saints were held to four hits as
Natalie Murphy,
Kyleigh Taylor, Kappos, and
Alyssa Velez all had a single.
Jayla Jackson (1-1) took the loss for Embry-Riddle (2-1). She fanned 14 batters.
Maggie Scott and Lia Johnson each collected two hits for the Eagles.
Flagler hosts Eckerd College tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Flagler Field.
