ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College won a pair of games late last weekend in Houston and they continued that trend tonight in its home opener.
Josh Shrouder's two-run double in the eighth rallied the Saints to a 2-1 win over Queens University of Charlotte Friday night at Drysdale Field.
The two starting pitchers,
Nathan Henderson of Flagler and Nick Charleson of Queens, both turned in good appearances.
Henderson allowed just one hit and one run over five innings of work. He struck out six.
Ethan Jones (1-0) finished the game and did not allow a run or a hit in four innings. He struck out a career-high eight batters, including the last six batters he faced.
Charleson (0-1) scattered six hits and allowed two runs in 7 1/3 innings. He struck out seven batters, but walked six. Charleson threw 135 pitches in his second outing of the season.
Flagler (4-0) trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the eighth.
Sean Lawlor got the rally started with a double to left-center and
Adam Mitchell followed with a sharp grounder into left field to put runners at the corners. After Mitchell stole second and
John Fiorenza was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Shrouder laced a double down the left field line to score Lawlor and Mitchell.
Queens (0-5) got a run in the fifth inning without the benefit of a hit. Mason Pickard drew a lead-off walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a ground out.
The same two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow at noon at Drysdale Field.
