ALBANY, Ga. — The Flagler softball team made up for a disappointing doubleheader-opening game one, where the Saints fell in a 1-0 defeat, with a 10-0, run rule of Albany State in the game two, five-inning victory Saturday at Golden Rams Field.
Flagler (11-4) will be back in action when it travels to in-state opponent Florida Tech for a Tuesday doubleheader, beginning at 4 p.m. in Melbourne.
The Saints struggled to get anything going versus Lauren Lowery (W, 1-3) in the first game as they combined for just three hits, with
Morgan Murphy,
Brittney Rayfield and
Zoe Mooney having the trio.
Kyra Gipson was impressive as usual, allowing just one run on one hit while striking out and tying a career-high 12 over seven innings; unfortunately, for the senior, the typical day ended on the wrong side to put her at 8-2 on the season.
In the second game, Flagler bounced back in a big way. Scattering across 10 hits on 10 runs while
Madelyn Wise (W, 3-2) tossed another Saint one-hitter and recorded a career-high in strikeouts (10), the visiting team shook off a tough game one loss. A seven-run second inning gave the Saints the momentum they needed as a five-inning fifth put the icing on the cake.
Alyssa Velez (2B, 3RBI) and
Morgan Murphy each had two hits, while
NaJah Gerrald,
Natalie Murphy (SB, 2RBI), Rayfield,
Courtney Robinson,
Kyleigh Taylor and Zooney added one apiece. Taylor's fifth-inning solo shot marked the sophomore's sixth blast, which is tied for first among all Division II players.
