AMERICUS, Ga. –
Gedi Juozapaitis and
Damerit Brown scored 27 and 25 points to help lead Flagler College to a 99-80 rout of Georgia Southwestern State University in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Storm Dome.
With the win, Flagler (12-14 overall, 8-10) clinches a berth in next month's PBC Tournament. This is the first time the program has made the conference's postseason tourney since joining the league in 2009-10. The last time the Saints played in a league tournament was Feb. 21, 2006 (the Florida Sun Conference Tournament), against the Savannah College of Art and Design.
"I think it's always important to mark small victories in your team's journey," said head coach
Chad Warner. "This serves as a nice day for Flagler College and Flagler Athletics. While this is by no means an ending point for our team, I do believe it's a great sign for things to come. Our team is always looking forward and expecting the best to come."
The Hurricanes scored the first eight points of the game, and with 7:43 left to go in the half, the score was deadlocked at 19. The Saints would go on a torrid 22-6 run to close the half and go into the locker room with a 39-25 lead.
Juozapaitis led a balanced scoring attack in the first half with 10 points.
Flagler's lead would swell to as many as 21 in the second half.
Juozapaitis sank 9-of-his-14 shots from the field, including hitting six 3-pointers. Brown posted his first double-double of the season as he added 10 rebounds to his line. He had six assists and a career-high two blocked shots.
Chris Metzger chipped in with 12 points and nine rebounds while
Allante Pickens supplied 12 points.
Damir Hadzic contributed 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Saints shot 55.1 percent (38-69) from the field, including a blistering 67.6 percent (23-34) in the second half alone.
Jamari Dean led Georgia Southwestern (10-14, 5-13) with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Devon Higgs added 15 points while Abdul Dial tacked on 14 points. Jalen Cameron and Soloman Thomas added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Flagler will play its penultimate home game on Wednesday against Clayton State University at 7:30 p.m.
