ST. AUGUSTINE –
Chris Metzger tied his career-high with 20 points, but a late basket by Columbus State University was the deciding factor in a 74-73 over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
A layup by Metzger gave the Saints a 71-66 lead with 2:17 to go, but the Cougars chipped away and pulled to within one (73-72) on a transition layup by Landarius Horton with one minute left. After a Flagler turnover, and a Cougar timeout, Horton banked a six-foot jumper with eight seconds left.
Derrick Ellis, Jr. drove the lane for a layup to put the Saints, but the ball came off the front rim and
Tyler Collier's put-back tap was short. Horton corralled the rebound as the horn sounded.
Metzger made 10-of-12 from the field, which was a career-high for made field goals for the 6-foot-7 junior forward.
Allante Pickens poured in 15 points with the help of four 3-pointers for Flagler (11-13 overall, 7-9 PBC).
Gedi Juozapaitis added 11 points and he grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Horton finished with a game-high 30 points and added seven rebounds for Columbus State (14-10, 9-7). Anthony Moore chipped in with 16 points while Bryant Givens recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Flagler takes on Lander University on Wednesday (Feb. 19) at 7:30 p.m. at Greenwood, S.C.
