ST. AUGUSTINE — A little rain couldn't dampen the Saints' victorious Thursday.
The short rain delay during doubles play was the only thing holding the No. 13-ranked Flagler women's tennis team back as it followed by upending visiting No. 18 Florida Southern, 5-2, at the Flagler Tennis Center.
"I think we came out a little nervous in doubles today, knowing that playing Florida Southern is always a close match," Flagler women's tennis head coach
Rodrigo Puebla said," but in singles we were able loosen up a little bit and ended up playing and fighting very well. We are very happy with this win today and are looking forward to our next tough match against Palm Beach Atlantic on Sunday."
The Saints continue their six-match homestand when PBA comes to St. Augustine for a 1 p.m. start Sunday.
In doubles, the Mocs (0-2) won the point with Flagler's No. 2 pair of
Lixin Wang and
Anika Nissen winning 6-3, but the Saints (2-2) made up for it by winning five-of-six singles matches.
No. 1
Eden Schlagenhauf led the way, winning 6-2 in both sets as No. 2 Wang followed suit with her straight set wins, 6-2 and 6-4.
Amelie Vossgaetter used her consecutive wins, 6-2 and 6-3, to hand the Saints another point as did No. 3 Nissen with her straight-set wins, 6-2 and 7-6.
Alessandra Traub topped off the impressive singles matches with a three-set win, 7-5, 6-3 and a 6-0 blank.
